Painting by Vasily Andreevich Tropinin "The Lacemaker" was written and presented to the public in 1823. She immediately won the recognition of eminent artists of that time, although the author at that time had just received his freedom and ceased to be a serf. Perhaps the very fact that the artist was a native of the people helped him to convey to the connoisseurs of art a new idea for them: peasant women can also be graceful, have noble gestures and thin fingers!
Tropinin's work is a portrait of a toiler, captured at the moment when she briefly interrupted her painstaking work. She is probably looking at the person who entered the room, but the author managed to create the illusion that the girl is looking directly into the eyes of the viewer. And he does it with a little naive slyness, coquetry and sympathy at the same time. From the expression on the girl's face, it is clear that work gives her pleasure. She weaves lace with a kind of calmness and a pacified half-smile on her lips. True, her image is somewhat inconsistent with the prevailing stereotype about peasant women: the outfit of the Tropinin heroine, the colors of her clothes are quite refined. But all the same, we have before us a simple, neatly combed girl, she has no jewelry. She doesn't need them! Its main decoration is beauty, spirituality, and friendliness. The picture seems to prove:peasant women are graceful, charming and intelligent.
Of course, it is the beautiful face that seems to be glowing from the inside that attracts the eye, but the picture contains many other details, written down to the smallest detail. This bobbin, and scissors, and a box for needlework, and a sheet of paper with a pattern transferred to it - all this creates an impression of naturalness. The girl does not pose for the author, she does her usual work, and her emotions are sincere.
Even an inexperienced viewer understands that the author admires his model, for him she is the personification of work and harmony, a symbol of simplicity and femininity. It is not surprising that even nowadays art lovers go to the Tretyakov Gallery especially to admire the painting The Lacemaker.
The small-sized work brought fame to V.A. Tropinin as an artist who created a new type of genre portrait, which is distinguished by a sense of the joy of being and the spirit of intimacy.
