The opposite of Famus society and Chatsky in the comedy "Woe from Wit"

Why did Alexander Sergeevich Griboyedov call his comedy "Woe from Wit"? Ironically, we are usually taught that intelligence and knowledge are very important. There is no future without intelligence and knowledge, and they must be obtained. So why then Griboyedov says that intelligence and knowledge bring sorrow?

The comedy tells about the customs of the 18th century Soviet society. At that time, the upper class was held in high esteem, and the upper class had a lot of money. These people quickly accepted into their circle other rich people who were similar to themselves and tried to communicate only with their own kind.

The society of Alexander Andreevich Chatsky and Pavel Afanasyevich Famusov are two opposite sides. In comedy, the conflict between these parties is the main motivation for the work. The society got its name because the landowner Famusov was its center.

The landowner Famusov is a very respected person in certain circles, and he is ready to communicate with people who know how to please him. In his social circle, it is customary to cover up the discovered shortcomings with praise, and in no case talk about them directly.

Chatsky, on the contrary, is an honest, wise and educated person. He did not know how to be hypocritical for his own benefit. No matter how difficult it was, Chatsky was used to telling the truth and could not come to terms with what was happening around.

What should people like Chatsky do? The most difficult thing is to obey all these rules of disgust and hypocrisy for those who are not familiar with lies and cannot tolerate all these stupid acts of counts and princes.

This situation is relevant for any period of time, both for the past and for the present modern world. It is a pity that stupidity and hypocrisy prevails in some society even now.
