The tragedy of Katerina in the work of A.N. Ostrovsky Thunderstorm
Essay for grade 10 on the topic: “The tragedy of Katerina in the work of A.N. Ostrovsky Thunderstorm ".

Katerina is undoubtedly the main character in Ostrovsky's The Thunderstorm. As the wife of Tikhon and daughter-in-law of Kabanikha, she comes into conflict with the kingdom of ignoramuses and despots, which is the key idea of the entire work.

Only by fully realizing all the ideas experienced by Katerina about life and about the surrounding reality, one can understand the whole tragedy of the drama. From the words of the girl, you can make up the perception of her world. A world in which no one comes up with the idea of opposing himself to society, since the hero does not have the opportunity to perceive himself separately from the surrounding society. Katerina is in the idyllic harmony of her own family life. However, this whole idyll is based solely on violence and coercion. The main life drama of Katerina is concluded in this very idyll, in the presence of foundations with which everyone voluntarily agrees.

The main character is given for Tikhon as a young girl. In fact, there was no choice in front of her. The family decided everything for her. She becomes a member of the Kabanov family, ready to love and respect her own mother-in-law. In return, she logically expects that, in addition to her ruler, her husband can be her support and protection, but in these expectations she is deceived. Tikhon is completely unsuitable for the role of head in a patriarchal family - he is too weak-willed for this. And Katerina, from the world of freedom, finds herself in a world of deception and cruelty, in which she manages to be neither pure nor perfect. The cruel reality does not allow her to fly up in her own dreams, rudely bringing her back to the ground, to continuous humiliation and absolute suffering.

What is left for Katherine? Slavery to your own weak-willed husband? Unquestioning obedience to the requirements of the mother-in-law? Katerina is not like that at all. A return to the old life is impossible, and the present life is not drawn to enjoy it. She is afraid of the mortal sin of suicide, but she is simply unable to live any longer. Rejecting all reality, she believes that death will grant her the necessary freedom from a soulless mother-in-law and a spineless spouse.
