The cynicism of the rich towards the poor has always existed. He did not bypass the family of the nineteenth century. A beautiful, intelligent, but poor girl is trying to arrange her personal life.
They live with their mother in a house where comfort and open communication prevail. The house is not mired in poverty, the mother knows how to conduct small talk, dreams of marrying her daughter Larisa to a rich merchant without a dowry. Guests often gather for a cup of tea, chat, learn the news, sing songs, arrange dances. This house is not deprived of a gypsy visit, it is always fun and noisy.
A good face, smart, pure soul, Larisa attracts many, but the absence of a dowry repels almost everyone. The elderly and wealthy Knurov and childhood friend Vozhevatov note that it is always fun, pleasant to spend time in this house, discussing the imminent marriage of Larisa Dmitrievna, remembering that the older sisters got married unsuccessfully without a dowry.
Larisa had in mind the rich merchant Paratov, who liked her, and he was hers. But a year ago he suddenly disappeared, and Larisa spent the whole year in tears and sorrow, remembering him. Mother tortured her with constant gypsy chants, matchmaking, and the frequent gathering of guests in the house. And the girl decided to marry anyone who would like it right away. Karandyshev, who had visited this house for three years in order to make useful acquaintance with merchants and rich representatives, decided to marry her.
The homeless woman resigns herself, agrees to marry him, live beyond the Volga, in the forest. Her calm is disturbed by the sudden return of Paratov, confusion appears in her soul. Memories and passions are born in it, hope for the return of the groom, a wedding. But it turns out that he returned to rest and spend the night with Larisa before marrying a rich widow with a large dowry. He was going to have a wedding with another woman. The young girl is shocked, wants to throw herself off a cliff, and cannot find the strength to do this.
Karandyshev, seeing all this, forgives her, as he respects and loves. But Larisa refuses him. She agrees to expensive maintenance and a trip to Paris with the rich Knurov, feels like a thing at the fair. Karandyshev, furious, shoots her. The womanless woman takes the pistol from his hands, and manages to say that she herself shot herself without blaming anyone.
The cruel morals of society, cynicism, poisoning of the soul by the presence of wealth - these are aspects of modern society. The soul of Larisa is not understood, she is not accepted by the rich, because she does not have jewelry and a rich castle, she does not have money. She did not want to live, deceived by those whom she passionately loved and to whom she was sincerely open.
