Patriotism in Tolstoy's novel War and Peace

The great realist writer Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy told the historical truth about the events of 1812 in his novel "War and Peace". The work can be safely called an epic about partisans. The author depicted a whole gallery of vivid images of this war: officers Vasily Denisov and Dolokhov, collective farmers Tikhon Shcherbaty and headman Vasilisa. For such heroes, there is only one truth - if the enemy comes to conquer their country, one must fight the enemy, defending the honor of the Motherland.

In the image of Tikhon Shcherbaty, the people's avenger and brave man, Tolstoy vividly depicts partisans who experience boundless hatred for the enemy. Tikhon did not miss the opportunity to bring a prisoner, to bring a piece of clothing and French weapons, showing courage and courage. Everyone knows the strength and patience of Tikhon, so he is instructed to perform particularly difficult operations. Friendly humor and a kind heart are the hallmarks of the Russian people. All these human characteristics of the partisans of the Patriotic War of 1812 were fully manifested in the Great Patriotic War against the Nazi invaders.

Patriotic behavior appears in other episodes as well. The merchant Ferapontov saw that the city was about to collapse, opened the door of the store and allowed the residents to make out everything, not wanting to leave their goods to the enemy. For the townspeople, the evacuation of almost the entire population from Moscow was a remarkable patriotic feat. Tolstoy wrote that for the Russian people there is no doubt, it is better to leave than to submit to the French. It is impossible to be under their control. All residents understand this. The simple Russian peasants Karp and Vlas, who refuse to sell hay to the French and burn it, despite the fact that they are offering a high price, also express patriotism.

Patriotic enthusiasm in the Russian people is often expressed in deeds and heroism.
