The work was created by Vasily Shukshin in 1973, 1 year before the untimely death of the actor and writer. The object of the work "Kalina Krasnaya" (like many other stories and stories of the author) was an ordinary citizen of the Union, a simple worker. It is thanks to this image that Shukshin became close in spirit to readers, and he could confidently be called a "people's" writer.
In his work, the author diligently illuminates the problem of Soviet society, which was very relevant in those years. Is it possible for the protagonist to correct his mistakes in the past so that he can become a full-fledged citizen of a socialist society? Will the sins of the past be forgiven him, or will he be obliged to pay for them for the rest of his life? The story also raises the question of choosing between the pillars of any society: money, simple life or family. In the years when the work was created, the problem of mass education of people who returned to society after serving a sentence in places of imprisonment was very urgent. Not everyone who received civil status back could expect to get a job and find their place in life. And as a result, this was the only way - back to jail.In his work, the writer provides his readers with the hope that the mistakes of the past can well be corrected if his hero really wants it. And this hope is complemented by the image of a simple Russian woman who is ready to support the main character, not to let him stumble again. It is precisely such a protagonist that Yegor Prokudin is, who made mistakes in his life, but met Lyuba, whom he met by correspondence. She does not refuse him, although all relatives and friends discourage her. She surrounds the care of a former prisoner, for whom even money no longer has the same meaning. It changes with each page, acquiring the features of a full-fledged citizen. However, when he meets his mother, he still does not find the strength to confess to her, but seems to be a friend of his long-lost son.
At the end of the story, the reader can see that the main character was able to change, could become the one whom the beloved woman wanted to see in him. However, the creator cannot keep him alive. And although humanly it is a pity for the hero, the writer makes you wonder if a person should not necessarily pay for his sins.
