Tragedy of conscience (based on the play by A. Ostrovsky "The Thunderstorm")
In his work "The Thunderstorm" A. N. Ostrovsky depicts the life of a merchant family, shows the place of a woman in it. Katerina grew up in love, she was not limited in anything. And from this nest, she falls into the family of the merchant Kobanova. The girl marries Tikhon, the merchant's son. Kabanikha keeps her family in fear, as she firmly believes that it is fear that is the key to family relationships. As A. N. Ostrovsky himself says about her, "she ate her own household completely." Tikhon does not protect his wife from his mother in any way, since a weak-willed man himself is a victim of his mother.
The situation of Katerina is aggravated by the fact that she falls in love with Boris. He is not capable of serious deeds, he lacks determination. The man understands the tragedy of Katerina, but cannot help her. But for a girl, this is a sinful love, since a married woman, falling in love with a stranger, violates moral principles. The girl has a presentiment that this will not end in good, she has a presentiment of impending disaster. Thunderstorm and wild fear push Katerina to a public trial. She confesses her sin, because repentance prompts forgiveness. But a woman is not forgiven for her mistake. She could not live and suffer. Not finding salvation, she decides to take a desperate step.
The play "The Thunderstorm" reveals the theme of the "tragedy of conscience". Conscience, not love, is what is in the first place in the work of A. N. Ostrovsky. In this Despair leads Katherine to suicide, since death for her is the only way to get rid of earthly suffering, which for her is incomparable even with hell.
