Garnet bracelet, the theme of love in Russian literature of the XIX-XX centuries
In the works of the great Russian writer Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin, the theme of love is often touched upon, but in the story “the Garnet bracelet” this theme, in my opinion, takes on a particularly deep and dramatic character.
The main characters of the story are Princess Vera Nikolaevna Sheina and an official of the control chamber, George Stepanovich Zheltkov. Zheltkov, as they say, is head over heels in love with Vera, This married lady, the wife of a Prince, being only a small official. The first time he saw Vera in a circus box, he immediately fell in love with Her. For eight years Zheltkov wrote her unanswered letters that were full of tenderness, reverence and love. The only joy in the life of a minor official was the love of Faith. "...There is no animal, no plant, no person, more beautiful than you and more tender ... " – George Stepanovich admits in a suicide letter.
In the Shein family, Zheltkov's letters were perceived as a mockery and an audacity towards Faith. The garnet bracelet-a gift that is a family heirloom of Zheltkov and the most valuable thing of a poor official-outrages the family. Vera's brother Nikolai spoke with contempt of Zheltkov's letters, calling them impertinent. At the same time, Vera Nikolaevna's husband Vasily, as it seemed to me, did not attach much importance to the letters, considering them an ordinary curiosity.
In the end, Zheltkov decides to shoot himself, because he does not find any other way to stop loving Vera. His feelings will remain undivided, unable to melt the ice in the heart of the heroine of the story. And only General Anosov, a military comrade of Vera's father, thinks: "Maybe your path, Vera, has been crossed by the kind of love that women dream of”"
Of course, love is the most beautiful and lightest feeling available to a person. Love helped a minor official to find meaning and hope in his life. In my opinion, the hopeless, selfless and truly heartfelt feeling of the main character of the story proves that love is the most important component in the life of each of us. Because without love, life becomes completely different, meaningless and futile.
