 ...so who are you, finally?
- I am part of that power which eternally
wills evil and eternally works good...

Goethe's "Faust"
The novel mA Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita" is considered the most ambiguous and mysterious in the list of works created in the twentieth century. The author described his novel as "fantastic". The novel is a deep philosophical meaning. The work combines several lines, such as: religious, mystical, satirical and biblical lines. The main theme is the eternal conflict of good and evil. It turns out that is not always easy to tell which is the true light, and darkness.

In the novel of M. A. Bulgakov the image of Woland is an embodiment of dark forces. But this character is multifaceted and ambiguous.

The plot of the novel unfolds in two time planes: Soviet Moscow and Ancient Jerusalem. Voland is the link passing through two epochs. On the one hand he appears to us as the devil, Lord of the dark forces, on the other – positive, wise character, capable of understanding, compassion, kindness and forgiveness.

What is the true purpose of arrival in the capital of the Prince of darkness and his retinue? Voland himself answers this question. He says he wants to observe for any changes in the society over the past century. To implement his plan, Voland happy idea, and then punish the Muscovites for their weaknesses and vices. Initially, its actions seen as something sinister, but actually, Woland is right. He only punishes those people who are prone to selfishness, lust, greed, pettiness. Thus is accomplished a process of fair justice to the society whose evils go with him for centuries.

In any endeavor need faithful companions. In the image of the past and presented in a work of Woland's Suite. All their words and deeds, until the last pages of the book – all irony and sarcasm. This technique is used to contrast the wisdom and greatness of Woland and his entourage to make fun of the absurd situations into which the Muscovites, as well as the defects and weaknesses inherent in them.

Thus, it becomes clear that the image of Woland – the key character of the novel of M. A. Bulgakov. He is not the personification of evil, just the personification of justice. Despite its power, it can give every man his due, but not in forces to change society. Based on the foregoing, it becomes clear that humanity itself can lead to death. But the path to salvation is – it is in the hearts of the people.
