The Master and Margarita: an unusual interpretation of the image of the devil

When many hear the novel The Master and Margarita, they are guided by science fiction. However, the work goes beyond the scope of this genre. Of course, Woland with his retinue is a character in mythology, but only his role in the novel is obvious. Bulgakov tried to convey with the help of evil spirits the real relations of people. An example is the fact that Woland is needed in order to expose the vices of people.

Only the demonic character is not an absolute evil. Woland is able to have mercy, which was already unusual for the interpretation of the devil. Suffice it to recall the scene when one person's head was unscrewed during the performance. Then, when the audience asked to pardon the sufferer, Woland agreed. He understood: there are many bad people in Moscow, but there is hope for their correction.

The devil does not punish for his own pleasure. He brings just retribution. Sometimes it seems that Woland is a fair judge, and not a representative of the lowlands of hell. The image is ambiguous. Moreover, Woland helps Margarita find her happiness.

When you read a novel, you imagine pictures of the events taking place. The works are striking in the size and depth of the idea. However, Woland's retinue is not as honest and fair as their master. They remind the reader of the old principle that "Evil is evil." Such a contradiction shows the following: the evil spirits, like people, have personalities, sometimes destroying traditional ideas.

The novel “The Master and Margarita” is a realism, in which mysticism helps to reveal the real relations between people, to expose their double standards: they fawn on the authorities, and speak to the weak from a position of strength.
