Yellow Petersburg in the work "Crime and Punishment" by F.M. Dostoevsky

Fyodor Mikhailovich's work reflects the era. The image of St. Petersburg is especially pronounced. Dostoevsky to some extent continues the ideas laid down by N.V. Gogol (the wrong side of the city), but demonstrates everything even more sharply.

When you read "Crime and Punishment", it becomes scary: the city literally absorbs the heroes, does not give them rest. Pale yellow houses create a dull backdrop that heightens the sickness of the person.

Suffice it to recall Rodion Raskolnikov. Around him are old, dilapidated houses. The hero feels a kinship with these buildings, although he is much younger than the buildings. Morally the schismatics are older than their years, because living in poverty ages.

Dostoevsky's illness manifests itself in the atmosphere. Yellow water and a yellowed glass - this is how the author describes the condition of Rodion Raskolnikov's illness. Moreover, in Dostoevsky's view, yellow is a symbol of illness and poverty.

You can remember people. All the impoverished and beggars in the novel wear clothes that are yellowish. Either old age did it, or originally things were that color. Poverty sometimes manifests itself in the material plane, but it also has a negative effect on a person's condition, kills all the good in his soul.

Dostoevsky emphasizes the presence of yellow wallpaper in the rooms of individual characters. This decision aggravates the situation, emphasizing, so to speak, the same type of poverty. How to be mentally healthy when poverty of spirit and purse forms the environment around? Dostoevsky always remains a symbolist, although all his works reflect reality.
