The Hobbit People, as an invention of the writer Tolkien

Essay for the 5th grade on the topic: The people of Hobbits, as an invention of the writer.

Is the name "hobbit" really invented by a famous English writer?

Many literary critics today are wondering whether the Hobbits were invented by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, or whether he simply borrowed this image, which is certainly similar to a child. Moreover, the majority is inclined to the first part of the disputants. One of them even deciphered the very name of the people. According to him, the hobbit is nothing more than the addition of two words "homo" - meaning human essence in Latin, and" rabbit " - the English word meaning rabbit. According to this literary critic, there is nothing scientific in this concept. I think that it is quite logical for me to adhere to a similar point of view.

The Hobbit People and Tolkien's followers

It can be fairly confidently stated that in European mythology, which the famous writer was a follower of, there are basically no creatures similar to Hobbits. One of the opponents of this opinion, however, expresses a not very convincing idea that the concept of "hobbit" is found in the bestiary of Michael Denham, unknown to modern science, who was published... already in the XV century! However, even researchers of this theory, almost deluded in the depths of time, do not consider themselves obliged to connect the root of the word "hob" used by Denham with Tolkien's rather small and quite pretty people. At the same time, the Hobbits themselves did not want to remain unknown, and therefore their mention surfaced in the same Middle-Earth, but three hundred years later.

N. D. Perumov as a follower of Tolkien

In the opinion of most readers, the relatively young writer from St. Petersburg should not have even touched on this topic, which was once touched upon by an English classic. For which, however, the Russian writer himself was quite deservedly beaten up by Tolkien's admirers. However, his injuries healed, and his creativity was remembered. However, in his trilogy, Nikolai Danilovich managed to simply abuse the theme of Middle Earth, created by an Englishman. And if the first two parts of "Spears of Darkness" still aroused quite reasonable interest, then the final part, namely "Adamant of Henna" simply destroyed Middle Earth, although Perumov definitely did not have the right to do so. Although in his book the Hobbit remains one of the main characters. It's about Folco Brandybuck, a distant descendant of Meriadoc himself. However, it would be much better for the writer to focus on the fall of the states most famous in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Rohan and Gondor. The reader's sadness at the loss of all that is old and familiar would be quite sufficient.

The Unhealthy Hobbit Hypothesis

From literature, you can return to reality. For example, in 2003, in a cave on the island of Flores in the Indonesian archipelago, the remains of an ancient man were discovered, who during his lifetime was no taller than a meter and had a rather small brain. It was easy to imagine the man quite alive, and in this case he looked a lot like a Hobbit, as Tolkien, Perumov, Sabkowski or Lukyanenko described them. The remains were immediately dubbed "the remains of an unhealthy hobbit". It turns out that it was not Tolkien who proved himself the inventor of a new race. Who knows, maybe Hobbits really existed in reality?
