This is a very short story that describes the difficult fate of a peasant boy. In the center of the work is a scene when Vanka writes a letter to his beloved grandfather and asks him to take him home. The text of the letter is so heartfelt and heartbreaking that tears come to my eyes! It is difficult for a child to be surrounded by strangers, he performs work that is too much for his age, even nurses a very tiny baby. Vanka is being severely and unfairly punished. People don't even treat their own pets the way they treat a boy.

The author contrasts the life of Vanka before the death of his mother and after. The previous owners treated him well. Or maybe it was just because there was someone to protect him. And now he's an orphan. After all, Vanka was kicked out when he was left without his mother… Many sad events happened in the life of such a small child. He had to grow up prematurely. And worst of all, there were a lot of such children with broken destinies in Tsarist Russia. The problem of serfdom is central to Anton Pavlovich's story.

It gets bitter when you read the epilogue. Vanka sent the letter without specifying his grandfather's address. He is happy that he managed to carry the envelope unnoticed. But the reader understands that this only gives hope to the child. And perhaps, thanks to this hope, he will survive the difficult tests that await him ahead.
