Ivan Vasilyevich was killed by such an act. When he returned, he realized that he could no longer look at Varenka. If her father was that kind of person, then she might not be as perfect as she'd imagined. The narrator realizes in an instant that the feeling is being extinguished, like the wax of a melting candle.
That's how it is in life: love can give you wings, but sometimes one act snaps off the wings. The person is disappointed. Ivan Vasilyevich still remembered Varenka with trepidation, but he would never forget Her father.
