The second volume of Gogol's "Dead Souls": the concept of the work, the complexity, the images

NV Gogol began working on the second volume of Dead Souls when he was in a rather depressed state. He tried to continue work for ten years, while burning his work twice. For the first time in 1845, and only later - in 1852. In Letters 1848-1852. In a letter to V. A. Zhukovsky, he wrote that it is necessary to expose not only the vices of society, but also "valiant folk qualities ... without excluding even those who, having no room to freely develop, are not noticed and appreciated by everyone." Presumably, in the second volume, he was supposed to just show people who can repent and begin their path to change.

Gogol is working on the second volume of Dead Souls in a state of long and deep crisis. He spent ten years working on this work, and burned it twice. The accidentally saved chapters are from one of the earliest editions and are very far from what the book should have been.

However, the difficulty came in the fact that it was necessary to find positive phenomena in life and show how they are embodied in life, tell about the heroes. However, it all looked too perfect, which is why they do not even seem to be real people.

Analyzing the characters' images, you can see some similarities with the characters from the first volume. For example, Tentetnikov is not a bad person, but inactive, he strives to write a philosophical work, he is not at all involved in the economy. Obviously, he is very close to Manilov, who also loves to sit and dream, but changes nothing. However, the main difference between Tentetnikov is that he at least notices that there are problems in his household, but he cannot fix them.

Kostanzhoglo is an economic landowner who understands that he needs the peasants so that everything is good for him. Some researchers compare him with Sobakevich, because they have a similar description of a strong hut, as well as similar views on the economy.

Petukh Petr Petrovich is another hospitable host who loves to eat. And with him they spend in parallel to Nozdryov. Ulinka, Betrischev's daughter, is compared to the governor's daughter. And Koshkarev, on the whole, shows an abnormal enthusiasm for the bureaucratic management system of the economy, but he tries to organize it.

Also, one of the few characters appears who seems positive against the background of the rest. Murazov is a rich man, but not devoid of patriarchal virtue. His "Sermon" is dedicated to the need to improve mental property.

However, critics did not particularly perceive this character, like Kostanzhoglo, because they did not look like real people.
